Artist, Teacher & Always Learning
Irene Lawrence’s art is an exploration of diverse media and materials that bring her vision to life in unique and unexpected ways. She works with watercolor, oils, acrylics, plaster on canvas, liquid stained glass, weavings, and cultural crafts. A distinctive element of her practice is incorporating found objects, including trash collected during walks, which she applies to canvas to create abstract compositions. Her subjects range from landscapes and still life to commissioned work reflecting a broad and versatile approach.
Her selection of subject matter is deeply intuitive, driven primarily by her emotions and the materials available to complete each project. This spontaneous and responsive process allows her work to remain fresh and authentic. Color is a primary attraction for Irene; it is what draws her to particular scenes and inspires her artistic choices.
Music, weather, and the sounds of nature serve as her creative fuel, providing a soundtrack and atmosphere that influence the mood and energy of her pieces. For Irene, the preparation of the canvas is a vital part of her technique. She enjoys creating texture through layering plaster, fabric, and other found materials, building a tactile foundation that invites both visual and physical engagement. This hands-on, textural approach, combined with her willingness to experiment with unconventional materials, makes her art truly one-of-a-kind.
Through her work, Irene Lawrence offers not only a visual experience but also a tangible connection to the environment and emotions that shape her creative journey.
